Multicultural Voices within a Book FP

Cultural Journey within America

America today is a multicultural society in which all of our students belong.

These titles are chosen with the goal of integrating America’s Multicultural Literature into our Libraries and Media Centers across the United States.   In their book, Stories Matter, Dana L. Fox and Kathy G. Short portrayed the many “emotionally charged” aspects for any precise definition of Multicultural Literature. It is said that you know authenticity, a “true” cultural voice, when you read it. Therefore these titles are listed because they fit the criteria for many literary awards, as well as having a “true” cultural voice. The debate for “insider/outsider” writing often times overlooks the authors’ ability for weaving an accurate portrayal of a character’s life and struggles. If an “outsider” author is listed, take time to read and research the book. Ask yourself, “Did I see and hear authenticity?” As educators we must help “bridge” our student’s experience of the world around them, beyond their family and home.

It is our charge to,

“Provide a sense of history,

a broad understanding of the current issues and debates,

and a glimpse of possible new conversations and questions”

for our students as life-long, multicultural, readers and learners.

(Fox & Short, 2003)
